Clinical Complaints

This module allows you to manage the standardized list of medical symptoms or issues (complaints) that patients report when they arrive at your facility. By organizing complaints into categories and setting default urgency levels, you help triage nurses and doctors quickly and accurately assess patient needs.

When Do I Use This?

  • When configuring the system for triage nurses to use during patient check-in.
  • When adding a new standardized medical symptom (like "Chest Pain" or "Fever") to your hospital's system.
  • When organizing medical symptoms into broader groups (like "Cardiovascular" or "Trauma") to make them easier to find.
  • When setting up automatic safety rules, such as restricting pregnancy-related complaints to female patients.

How To Use

Creating a Complaint Category

Categories group similar symptoms together, making them easier for staff to find on the screen.

  1. Go to the Categories section in the Complaints module.
  2. Click + New.
  3. Enter the Name (e.g., "Cardiovascular System").
  4. Assign a Color to help staff visually identify the category.
  5. Click Save.

Creating a New Clinical Complaint

  1. Go to the Complaints section.
  2. Click + New.
  3. Enter the Name of the symptom (e.g., "Chest Pain").
  4. Select the appropriate Category.
  5. Set the Default Acuity (urgency level) from 1 to 5.
  6. Specify if the complaint is Sex Specific (e.g., Male, Female, or Both).
  7. Click Save.

Field Descriptions

Complaint Fields

Field Name Description
Name The name of the medical symptom or issue (e.g., "Severe Headache").
Code A standardized medical code (like SNOMED or ICD) used to share data with other healthcare systems.
Category The broader group this symptom belongs to (e.g., "Neurology" or "Trauma").
Default Acuity The standard urgency level for this symptom. 1 is the most critical (Resuscitation) and 5 is the least critical (Non-urgent). This helps the system suggest triage priorities.
Sex Specific Restricts the complaint to a specific gender (Male, Female, or Both) to prevent data entry mistakes (e.g., assigning a prostate issue to a female patient).
Active Check this box to make the complaint visible and available for staff to select. Uncheck it to hide it.

Category Fields

Field Name Description
Name The name of the group (e.g., "Cardiovascular").
Code A short abbreviation or medical chapter code for the category (e.g., "CVS").
Color A color code used to highlight this category on the triage screens.
Description Additional details explaining what types of symptoms belong in this category.
Active Only active categories will appear in the system dropdowns.
Tip: Always double-check your Default Acuity levels. Setting these correctly ensures that patients arriving with life-threatening complaints are automatically flagged for immediate attention by the triage team!
