LOINC Directory
This module manages your facility's LOINC (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes) directory. LOINC is a universal standard used in healthcare to identify medical laboratory tests and clinical observations. Keeping this registry updated ensures your lab results are standardized and easily understood by other clinics, hospitals, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
When Do I Use This?
- When your laboratory introduces a new type of test and you need to log its universal code in the system.
- When updating your internal test dictionary to match national or international standards.
- When checking the official code or description of a specific medical observation.
How To Use
Adding a New LOINC Record
- Go to Health (or Laboratory) → LOINC from the main menu.
- Click + New to open a blank form.
- Enter the official Code and standard Name of the observation.
- Type out a clear Description to help your staff understand exactly what this test measures.
- Make sure the Active box is checked so doctors and lab techs can search for it.
- Click Save.
Searching for an Existing Code
Because the LOINC module is linked to the system's autocomplete feature, you can easily search for these codes while filling out lab orders or patient records just by typing the name or the code.
Field Descriptions
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The standard medical name of the lab test or observation (e.g., "Glucose in Blood"). |
| Code | The official LOINC alphanumeric identifier (e.g., "2345-7"). This must exactly match the universal registry. |
| Description | Additional details about the test, such as the specimen required or the clinical purpose. |
| Active | Check this box if your facility currently performs or refers this test. Uncheck it to hide the code from search menus without deleting historical data. |
Tip: Always look up the official code on the international LOINC registry website before adding it. Using the exact code ensures patient data transfers seamlessly to external hospitals or government health registries!
