Obstetric Management
The Obstetric module allows healthcare providers to track a patient's entire pregnancy journey. You can use this module to record the initial pregnancy details, log routine antenatal check-ups, and document the final delivery outcome, including the newborn's health and APGAR scores.
When Do I Use This?
- When a patient visits the clinic/hospital to confirm and register a new pregnancy.
- When a nurse or doctor performs routine antenatal care (ANC) check-ups to measure fetal growth and maternal health.
- When a baby is born, and you need to log the delivery method, newborn measurements, and APGAR scores.
How To Use
1. Registering a New Pregnancy
- Navigate to the Obstetric module and open Pregnancies.
- Click + New to create a new record.
- Select the mother's name in the Patient field.
- Enter the Last Period date. The system will automatically calculate the Expected Delivery Date for you.
- Fill in the patient's medical history and delivery plan, then click Save.
2. Logging an Antenatal Visit (Routine Check-up)
- Open the patient's active Pregnancy record.
- Scroll down to the Antenatal section and click Add.
- Enter the current Reading Date. The system will automatically calculate the Gestational Week based on the Last Period.
- Input the mother's vitals (Weight, Blood Pressure) and the fetal measurements (Heart Sound, Movement, etc.).
- Click Save.
3. Recording Delivery and Newborn Details
- Open the mother's Pregnancy record and update the Delivery Method, Delivery Outcome, and Delivery Date.
- Scroll down to the Neonate section and click Add to record the baby's birth.
- Enter the baby's Weight, Length, and Head Circumference.
- Save the Neonate record, then open it to add the APGAR scores for the 1-minute and 5-minute marks. The system will calculate the total APGAR score automatically.
Field Descriptions
Pregnancy Details
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Patient | The registered patient (expectant mother). |
| Number | The pregnancy number (e.g., 1 for first pregnancy, 2 for second). |
| Last Period | The date of the patient's Last Menstrual Period (LMP). |
| Delivery Date Expected | The Estimated Date of Delivery (EDD). Auto-calculated but can be manually adjusted. |
| Date Next Visit | When the patient is scheduled to return for their next check-up. |
| History & Delivery Plan | Notes regarding past medical history and specific plans for labor and delivery. |
| IUGR | Indicates if there is any Intrauterine Growth Restriction identified. |
| Delivery Method / Outcome | How the baby was delivered (e.g., Vaginal, C-Section) and the result of the birth. |
Antenatal Check-ups
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Gestational Week | How many weeks pregnant the mother is (automatically calculated). |
| Mother Weight / Blood Pressure | Maternal vital signs taken during the visit. |
| Fetal Movement / Heart Sound | Observations regarding the baby's activity and heartbeat. |
| Fetal Position / Engagement | The physical orientation of the baby in the womb. |
| Presence Of Oedema | Indicates if the mother is experiencing abnormal swelling. |
| Uterine Height / Fetal Weight | Measurements used to track the physical growth of the baby. |
Neonate (Newborn) & APGAR
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Baby | Links to the baby's own Patient Profile, if registered in the system. |
| Weight / Length / Head Circumference | The newborn's physical birth measurements. |
| APGAR | The overall health score of the newborn. This field is locked and updates automatically when APGAR tests are added. |
| Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration | The 5 criteria checked during an APGAR test. Selecting a status for each will automatically generate the final score. |
Tip: You do not need a calculator to determine the expected due date! When you enter the Last Period date, the system uses Naegele's rule (adding 1 year, subtracting 3 months, and adding 7 days) to find the Expected Delivery Date for you. If you change the Last Period date later, the expected delivery date will shift accordingly.
Tip: The Neonate's overall APGAR score is automatically calculated. Simply add an APGAR record, fill out the 5 criteria (Appearance, Pulse, etc.), and the system will do the math and update the baby's master record.
