Dentistry Overview
The Dentistry module provides a complete suite for managing a dental clinic. It allows dentists, hygienists, and receptionists to track patient dental health through visual charts, record periodontal exams, plan and bill treatments, and manage external dental laboratory orders (like crowns and bridges).
When Do I Use This?
- Routine Exams: To record missing teeth, existing restorations, and current conditions on a visual tooth chart (Odontogram).
- Hygiene Visits: To perform a 6-point periodontal probing exam and record bleeding or plaque.
- Treatment Planning: To schedule future procedures, estimate costs, and automatically generate invoices when work is completed.
- Lab Work: When sending impressions to a dental lab for a crown, bridge, or nightguard, and tracking when it will return.
- Training/Education: When instructors need to create "sandbox" clone patients for dental students to practice charting without affecting real medical records.
How To Use
1. Navigating the Visual Odontogram
The system automatically displays a visual tooth chart based on the patient's age (showing primary/baby teeth for children and permanent teeth for adults).
- Open a patient's Tooth Profile.
- The Odontogram will display the patient's teeth. Conditions (like root canals, extractions, or crowns) will appear as visual symbols or colors.
- Click directly on a specific tooth or surface (e.g., the top/occlusal surface) to select it for a new treatment or condition update.
2. Recording a Periodontal (Perio) Chart
The Perio Chart allows for fast, keyboard-driven data entry for gum health.
- Navigate to the patient's Perio Chart screen.
- If screening, enter the BPE Scores (Basic Periodontal Examination) in the top panel.
- For a full exam, click into the grid. Use your keyboard arrows (Up, Down, Left, Right) or Tab to move between teeth and surfaces.
- Type numbers (e.g., 2, 3, 4) to record Pocket Depths.
- Use quick keys while hovering on a cell: press B for Bleeding, P for Plaque, or S for Suppuration (Pus).
- Click Save Draft to save your progress, or finalize it when the exam is complete.
3. Creating Treatments and Plans
- Go to Treatments or click a tooth on the Odontogram.
- Select the Procedure (e.g., Composite Filling, Extraction).
- Select the specific Surfaces involved (e.g., Mesial, Occlusal).
- Set the State (e.g., Planned, Completed).
- Once a treatment is marked with a billable state, the system will automatically generate a billing invoice for the patient (unless Skip Billing is checked).
4. Managing Dental Lab Cases
Use this when ordering custom items like crowns, dentures, or aligners.
- Go to Lab Cases and click + New.
- Select the Patient, Tooth, and Lab (Supplier).
- Choose the Service requested (e.g., Zirconia Crown). The system will automatically calculate the Due Date based on the lab's standard turnaround time and estimate the cost.
- Select the Shade (e.g., A1, B2) and Material.
- Type any special instructions and save.
5. Writing Clinical Notes with AI Assistance
- Go to Chart to write clinical notes.
- Select a Template to load standard forms and text.
- Fill out the chart. The built-in AI assistant acts as a senior clinical advisor and will automatically read your chart and generate a brief, professional summary in the Interpretation field.
Field Descriptions
Perio Chart Fields
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| PD (Pocket Depth) | The depth of the gingival sulcus, measured in millimeters. |
| GM (Gingival Margin) | The position of the gum line relative to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). |
| CAL (Clinical Attachment Level) | Auto-calculated by the system (Pocket Depth + Gingival Margin). |
| Mobility / Furcation | Grades indicating the looseness of a tooth or bone loss between roots. |
Treatment Fields
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Procedure | The specific dental service being performed. Linked to a billing item. |
| Plan | The broader Treatment Plan this specific procedure belongs to. |
| Surfaces | The parts of the tooth being treated (e.g., Mesial, Distal, Lingual, Buccal). |
| State | Current status (e.g., Planned, In Progress, Completed). Triggers billing if marked as billable. |
| Skip Billing | Check this box if this procedure should NOT generate an invoice (e.g., rework, free consultation). |
Lab Case Fields
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Service | The item you are purchasing from the lab (e.g., E-Max Crown). |
| Shade / Stump Shade | The tooth color selected for the final restoration. |
| Sent Date / Due Date | When the impression was sent, and when the lab promises to return the final product. |
Tip - Inventory Automation: If your clinic uses "Kits" (e.g., a "Composite Filling Kit" that includes gloves, composite material, and bonding agent), attaching a Kit to a Procedure will automatically deduct those items from your warehouse inventory every time the treatment is billed!
Tip - Student Simulation: If you are a clinical instructor, the Dentistry module includes a simulator. By providing a "Template Patient ID", the system will instantly clone the patient, their teeth, treatments, and charts into a randomized, anonymous "Shadow Patient" for your students to practice on safely.
