LOINC (Medical Codes)
This module allows you to manage LOINC (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes) records in your system. LOINC is a universal standard used to identify medical laboratory observations and clinical tests. By using this module, you ensure that your clinic or hospital uses standardized terminology that is easily understood by other healthcare providers and laboratories.
When Do I Use This?
- When setting up a new laboratory test or clinical observation in your system.
- When you need to update an existing test description to match current medical standards.
- When retiring an old test code that is no longer performed by your facility.
How To Use
Adding a New Medical Code
- Navigate to the LOINC module from the main menu.
- Click the + New button.
- Enter the standard Code and the Name of the test.
- Provide a clear Description of the observation.
- Ensure the Active box is checked.
- Click Save.
Deactivating an Old Code
If a test is no longer used, you should deactivate it rather than delete it, so that historical patient records remain intact.
- Find and open the code you wish to retire.
- Uncheck the Active box.
- Click Save.
Field Descriptions
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The standard medical name for the test or observation (e.g., "Fasting Glucose"). |
| Code | The official LOINC identifier used for the test (e.g., "14771-0"). |
| Description | Additional details about what the test measures, the method used, or clinical notes. |
| Active | Indicates if this code is currently available for use by doctors and nurses. Uncheck this to hide the code from active dropdown menus. |
Tip: Always double-check your codes against the official LOINC directory before saving. Accurate coding ensures smooth communication with external labs and prevents billing delays!
