Discipline

Overview

This module allows you to define and manage laboratory disciplines or departments. In a laboratory setting, a "discipline" refers to a specific branch of testing, such as Hematology, Microbiology, Pathology, or Biochemistry. Setting these up helps organize your lab tests, route workflows to the correct technicians, and structure your final reports.

When Do I Use This?

  • When setting up your laboratory system for the first time to categorize your services.
  • When your clinic or hospital opens a new laboratory department.
  • When you need to reorganize how tests are grouped on patient results and lab reports.

How To Use

Adding a New Laboratory Discipline

  1. Navigate to the Laboratory section from the main menu and select Disciplines.
  2. Click the + New button.
  3. Enter the full Name of the lab department (e.g., "Biochemistry").
  4. Assign a short Code (e.g., "BIO").
  5. Set the Sequence to control where this discipline shows up in your lists.
  6. Click Save to add the discipline to your system.

Updating an Existing Discipline

  1. Open the list of Disciplines.
  2. Click on the name of the discipline you want to change.
  3. Update the necessary fields (like changing the sequence order or updating the description).
  4. Click Save.

Field Descriptions

Field Name Description
Name The full title of the laboratory department (e.g., "Hematology", "Immunology"). This is what patients and doctors will often see on reports.
Code A short, unique abbreviation used by the system and staff for quick reference (e.g., "HEM", "IMM").
Sequence A number that controls the display order. Disciplines with lower numbers (e.g., 1, 2) will appear at the top of drop-down menus and reports, while higher numbers appear further down.
Description Optional details about what kind of tests are performed in this discipline, or internal notes for your staff.
Tip: When assigning sequence numbers, use increments of 10 (e.g., 10, 20, 30). This leaves room to easily squeeze a new discipline into the middle of your list later on (e.g., 15) without having to renumber everything!
