Container

Overview

The Container module helps you define and manage the physical vessels—like blood tubes, specimen cups, and swabs—used to collect patient samples in the laboratory. By setting up containers correctly, you ensure nurses and lab technicians always know exactly which tube or cup to use for a specific test.

When Do I Use This?

  • When your clinic or hospital introduces a new type of lab test that requires a specific collection tube.
  • When you need to standardize the collection instructions (like tube color and required volume) for the nursing or phlebotomy team.
  • When you are setting up your laboratory system for the first time.

How To Use

Adding a New Container

  1. Go to Health → Laboratory → Containers from the main menu.
  2. Click the + New button.
  3. Enter a clear Name (e.g., "Lavender Top Tube").
  4. Fill out the Color, Capacity, and select the appropriate measurement Unit.
  5. Click Save to add the container to your system.

Updating an Existing Container

  1. Open the list of Containers.
  2. Click on the name of the container you want to update.
  3. Make your necessary changes. If you no longer use this container in your facility, simply uncheck the Active box.
  4. Click Save.

Field Descriptions

Field Name Description
Name The standard name of the vessel (e.g., "Red Top Tube", "Urine Specimen Cup").
Code A short internal identifier or manufacturer barcode used to quickly find this container (e.g., "SST", "EDTA").
Color The visual color of the cap or container. This is extremely helpful for phlebotomists when drawing blood.
Capacity The amount of sample the container holds (e.g., 5.0, 10.0).
Unit The measurement unit for the capacity (e.g., mL, cc, oz).
Description Any extra notes or special handling instructions for staff (e.g., "Gently invert 8 times after collection").
Active Indicates if this container is currently stocked and used. Uncheck this if a container is discontinued, rather than deleting it.
Tip: Always include the cap color in both the Name and Color fields. This creates a foolproof way for staff to grab the correct tube during a busy blood draw.
