Specimen
Last updated: 2026-03-29
Overview
The Specimen module is used to manage the master list of biological samples (specimens) collected by your clinic or laboratory. This is where you define the different types of samples your facility handles, such as blood, urine, or tissue swabs.
When Do I Use This?
- When your laboratory starts processing a new type of biological sample.
- When you need to standardize the naming and abbreviations (codes) used on sample labels.
- When setting up your lab system for the first time.
How To Use
Adding a New Specimen Type
- Go to the Laboratory section from the main menu and select Specimens.
- Click the + New button.
- Enter the Name and a short Code for the sample type.
- Add any helpful handling or general information in the Description box.
- Click Save to add the specimen to your system.
Viewing and Printing the Specimen List
Because this module supports reports, you can generate a list of all active specimen types for reference at the nurse's station or lab bench.
- Open the Specimen list screen.
- Click Report or Print to generate a document containing all your standardized specimen codes and descriptions.
Field Descriptions
| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The full, common name of the sample (e.g., "Whole Blood", "Urine", "Saliva"). |
| Code | A short, unique abbreviation for the sample. This is often printed on small test tube labels (e.g., "BLD", "URN", "SLV"). |
| Description | Additional details about the sample type. You can use this space for quick reference notes, like standard storage temperature or collection requirements. |
Tip: Keep your Codes short (usually 2 to 4 letters). This ensures they can easily fit on small barcode labels used for test tubes and specimen cups.
